What is a baby's room made of?

When a family is planning to have a child or is already expecting one, a thousand lists start to appear. One of them is a list of essential items to furnish a nursery. Keep in mind that these lists only serve as a guide, as every motherhood is unique, every family is structured differently, and the needs are different for everyone. However, there is something common to any nursery: it needs to be, above all, functional.

That being said, let's talk a little about what we consider important to take into account when setting up a bedroom.

The first one is the sleeping area .

The crib immediately comes to mind when we think about the nursery; some people wouldn't do without it, while many parents report using it very little. Other parents prefer to use the famous Montessori beds from the start, and there are even those who opt for a mini crib next to the parents' bed in the first months of life.

Trying to define this preference is important to avoid unnecessary purchases, since the arrival of a baby comes with many expenses.

A crib provides security for some parents, knowing that the child will stay there, in the same place. It also offers comfort, since its height doesn't require parents to constantly bend down to put the baby down, as is the case with a low bed. On the other hand, a bed on the floor helps the child gain autonomy from an early age, improve their motor development, and establish their own boundaries.

The question now is to see what's important to you and make your choice!

Next, we come to the diaper changing area . You will need to change a baby's diapers about 10 times a day, so you need to consider a space for this.

This isn't a mandatory item for the nursery; it could be, for example, in the bathroom on a spacious countertop. It could also be on a dresser designed with a specific height for this purpose, or you could use an adapted space inside a closet. The most important thing is practicality in accessing the essential items for this moment: clean diapers, cleaning products, and clothes. In this area, organization is key, and there are many alternatives. Hanging baskets or shelves multiply support surfaces for those with limited counter space. Drawers or boxes containing everything you need can always be within reach, even when stored inside the closet, and can be moved to the changing area when necessary. Another tip is to assemble your cleaning kit with individual or neutral pieces; this way, when the child outgrows diapers, it's easy to reuse these items in other spaces and for other functions. At home, the water jug currently serves as a kitchen bowl, and the cotton ball holder went to the bathroom along with another container that became a jewelry box.

One thing babies do a lot, besides sleeping and having their diapers changed, is breastfeed. So another important point is the breastfeeding area .

A nursing chair or armchair always raises many questions. Some find it essential, while others prefer to use their own bed for this. For us, the combination of an armchair and a footrest is the best option. Since many hours are spent breastfeeding, we usually recommend comfortable but also very versatile furniture to our clients. As the months go by, you get the hang of breastfeeding, things become more practical, and the baby nurses less often as they grow. At this point, the armchair becomes less and less essential, so it's time to move it to another place in the house.

Speaking a little more about decorative items themselves, but no less essential, we have the rug and the curtains. They are largely responsible for the feeling of comfort in the room. The rug, in addition to thermal comfort, completes the room's overall composition, leaving everything in harmony.

For curtains, those that allow light to pass through ensure privacy with comfort. Of course, this also considers the use of blinds for those cozy naps in the dark!

But when choosing between these two, don't forget to consider ease of cleaning. And for allergy sufferers, special attention is also needed. Today there are already options of these products on the market that are specifically designed for them.

Finally, a point we consider important to analyze, and which isn't often discussed, is the versatility of the room. Babies develop very quickly, so the starting point for all the spaces we plan is that they should be able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of their owners. In the first few months, the baby has little mobility, but from 4/5 months onwards, an active exploration phase begins, which remains in intense development. Therefore, it's necessary to think about safe spaces for play, free access to books and toys, and support surfaces for the baby to try to stand up. Here's the time to think about what a child's room should be made for the child! Everything within their reach so they can explore and develop.
