Riding a bicycle - a favorite activity for children!
Apr 01, 2021
Riding a bicycle is very likely the favorite activity of most children. It's one of those activities that everyone enjoys, boys and girls as children or adults.
The secret to this universal appeal isn't just that cycling is simply fun. There are inherent characteristics that contribute, even unconsciously, to our well-being and success on various levels. How?
If this is your case, if you already have in mind how and where you can enjoy a few days of well-deserved rest with your family, we'll help you think about some of the essential items you can include in your travel preparation list to make it a practical and smooth trip.
Let's start with the balance exercise required when riding a bicycle: during the acquisition of this skill, our resilience is tested to the maximum! When we finally manage to get the balance right, fear transforms into security and a feeling of self-control that can be transferred to other areas of our lives.
Similarly, the need for motor coordination, in addition to balance, contributes to the development of many other physical activities. When riding a bicycle, we work on the concepts of speed, safety, cause and effect, and much more. Even without keeping these aspects in mind while practicing, it is, in fact, a very complete activity.
As a rule, the first contact with a wheeled vehicle that simulates, at a very early age, what it's like to ride a bicycle, is with a tricycle. With or without pedals, there's no baby who doesn't love being taken for a ride on their tricycle! They end up becoming autonomous in its use, pushing with their feet or pedaling, for play or transportation.
For parents, tricycles are a very practical alternative to the typical stroller, especially for short distances (walks around the neighborhood, trips to the supermarket, or vacation outings along the promenade, for example). Offering storage space for parents' accessories, sunshades to protect the child and make the ride safer and more enjoyable, among other features, a baby's first tricycle can be a great family ally.
However, as the baby grows, they should be encouraged to develop other skills, and for this, there is no better option than a bicycle! Start with a balance bike, which essentially works on balance and the ability to control speed/predict distances, and around 4 or 5 years old (or even earlier), the child will be ready to move on to one with pedals!
Banwood balance bikes , which you can purchase on our website, are built with great safety in mind, allowing your child to develop balance and steering, making the transition to a pedal bike easier later on.
It's important to mention that if your child has already mastered the balance on a balance bike, switching to a pedal bike with training wheels can reverse this process and be counterproductive. Instill confidence in your child so they can transition to the "grown-up" bike without fear, reinforcing the skills they've already acquired!
To make the process easier and the simple act of "riding a bicycle" even more fun than it already is, opt for accessories such as baskets that allow you to carry your favorite toy, pick up pebbles/twigs, take a snack, etc.
Whenever possible, schedule bike rides with your child(ren) because it's just as good for children as it is for adults. These are some of the benefits of this activity for parents, but the most rewarding part is the guaranteed family fun. Happy rides!
